    Why no 10ft winter tarps?

I am still learning, so forgive the ignorance ... but I don't understand why all winter tarps are gigantic. I'm extremely weight conscious, and want the smallest full cover tarp (with doors). But, it seems every winter tarp sold by cottage vendors has a minimum 11' length. Why?

If the standard hammock is 11 ft, and recommended hammock RL is 83%, then the typical "length" to cover is 9.13 ft.

So, why can't the tarp length be 10' and cover you cleanly? A 6' x 8' tarp with doors would do that, right? Yet no one sells it.

I know I COULD custom make it, but am more curious why I shouldn't. What am I missing?

    Thanks for the insight.

The trend is towards 11 ft. hammocks. So an 11 ft. hammock comes out to 109.56 inches with 83% ridgeline. Using a tarp with 11 ft. ridgeline, that gives you 11.2 inches of coverage on each end. Factor in the suspension length, and that's about the minimum you want to fart around with, unless you just want to get wet.

If you close the doors tightly though, why do you need 11.2 inches on each side instead of 5.2 from a 10' tarp? Assume doors like the SuperFly, for example.

The Superfly has an 11 ft. ridgeline and doors, so you are thoroughly covered if you have an 11 ft. hammock with ridgeline at 83% (109.56 inches), giving you 11.2 inches of coverage on each end. I don't know what kind of suspension you're using, but I use Dutch Whoopie Hook suspension attaching to continuous loops on the hammock. Let's say (because I'm not going to measure it), that the 8" continuous loops result in 4.5 inches of length once the continuous loops are larksheaded through the end channel. So now I'm at 109.56 inches plus (4.5 inches x 2), or 118.56 inches. Now I only have 6.7 inches of clearance on each side, but you want your rain break underneath the tarp so add 2 to 4 inches to put you at 122.56 inches, and now you have less than 4 inches of clearance on each end.

If you're gonna do the skimpy tarp thing, I'm not even sure how a Superfly even entered the conversation. You're gonna be bombproof with a Superfly and an 11 ft. hammock. It will take a heck of a storm to get you wet.

Just to reference the type of doors I mean. That shelter is the style I want, but too big/heavy for my purposes.

The topic is winter tarps, no? So you don't want a real winter tarp with doors, you're looking for something minimal? In other words, you're not really looking for a winter tarp with doors?

I want to get the smallest "comfortable" tarp with doors. In my searching, it looked like that meant winter tarp ... but no, not a true winter tarp, this would be for 3-season use.

If it helps, I am also trying to have it double as a tarptent when I'm hiking in the mountains without trees.
