To answer the OP, some hammocks have dedicated entry(think zippered bugnet) or footbox(think WBBB) or other mods that need to locate the head end from the foot end.

I use a Black Bishop Bag so I don't have to worry about getting the hammy head end correct. I do use Dutch Speed Hooks and ADutchable Clips.

The ADutchable Clips are set on the straps to attach the hammock hanging on one side or the other of the trees depending on my location. So I might want to consider a different Lead color for my Amsteel 7/64th to help identify quickly which side strap I want to pull out first.

I have a noob question. The OP asks what methods are used to identify head vs foot end by using code or some other logic. I'm totally new to hammocks so pardon the noobness here. I didn't realize there was a head end or a foot end. I thought you just hang it, get in it, and find the most comfortable lay. Question is: how do you initially determine which end is head and which is foot? Or is this something you determine by trial and error in finding your "sweet spot"?

    To answer your question...from above.

A simple gathered end with no frills has no head/foot end until you find your preferred lay(sweet spot). When modifications start, you "form" your head/foot end many different things like a footbox or shelf, peak bag or ridgeline(RL) organizer for ease of getting things, etc.

Then there are bridge hammocks with dedicated head end or bugnet entry system with zippers to consider. Specialty hammocks with ASYM lay etc, etc, etc.

Even with a basic hammock, I don't want my head where my stinky feet were the previous night/trip. OK, they don't stink, but it's still gross

Thanks! This sums things up pretty well.

I'm glad I asked. I had no idea there were so many different reasons to want to easily distinguish the head and foot end. Right now I have just a simple gathered end hammock. No frills. Sleeps sweet either direction. But that might not always be the case.

    What Trailslug said ^^^^

Both my hammock and tarp are directional. Tarp has longer guy lines on the 'front' side to accommodate various porch mode setups. Colored Dynaglide on the hammock and small colored loop attached to the ridge line d-ring help with identification.
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....
