A cheapo $7 pad from Wal-Mart or a dollar store windshield reflector will do you well for your first outing if it's not too cold, but you'll want to start thinking about how to keep your shoulders warm as well; that's what pushed me away from using the pad myself. There are some great DIY kits out there now for synthetic underquilts, or you can look at Arrowhead equipment if you want to get an inexpensive one.

This is a lot of great information. I picked up a decent pad at Walmart for $15. Using that for this trip and if all goes well, I will steer my wife (who is handy with a sewing machine) in the direction of some DYI under and over quilts for a Christmas present.

I have done some of the Superior trail using a cheap Walmart closed cell foam blue pad under me and a good bag. I was warm enough down to the high 30's, but, after trying someone else's UQ, I will be getting one.

There was a video out there by hillbilly deluxe about converting a sleeping bag to a underquilt, I have been looking for it but I have not been able to find it. The hammock does not go thru the bag but the bag is brought up underneath the hammock. I thought i saved the video but now I cant find it.

I live in Wisconsin and don't own a underquilt yet. I use my REI sleeping pad and a strip of reflectix around my shoulders.
