soft shell underquilt?

Hello all:

I am in Germany at the moment--will be here for about six more months-- and found a website selling outdoor fabrics here (oh no! an excuse to make gear abroad!)

They have various weights of softshell fabric for sale, and I was wondering if anyone had used this to make a summer underquilt? I was just thinking something for warm nights--or to double up over my winter underquilt, which is really too hot to be taking with me in warm weather.

The fabric I'm looking at is this one:

which is supposed to be elastic-y, wind and water resistant, and breathable.
10.5 oz per square meter. Weight is a little much maybe, but I am very small, 5' tall, so I wouldn't need it to be too large.

Any thoughts?

Hi. That fabric is pretty heavy. Note not only the weight, but the thickness: 2 mm is just over 5/64". Were you going to add insulation or count on the fabric itself (something like terry-cloth loops, I think)? I recently got some Pertex Microlight from UK, but I (and numerous others on this forum) were looking for Pertex Quantum (around .9 oz/sq. yd.). See if you can find some of that, and buy a lot of it. There was a German web site listed as a source for Quantum, but it didn't have translation to English, so I couldn't tell whether they had any.
The Microlight is similar (or the same as) the Pertex 4 listed here:

I agree with WVH, that seems really heavy, even for a short UQ. A better start would be with a Neat Sheet, which is much lighter and probably has similar qualities.

Hello all:

Yeah, it is a bit heavy I guess. The same website does also sell Quantum--I was thinking about that or the Pertex as well, but will that really do anything to keep me warm on a warm afternoon/night? I'm talking 65/70 degrees fahrenheit... just need something to avoid the cold butt and can't abide pads in my hammock.

I was not planning on adding any insulation, just wanted a single sheet something to hang under me for warm hangs.

Also, I don't know I just think I would feel more secure in being warm with something a little heftier under me than a single windshirt-like layer...and I hate being cold. If I'm calculating right I'd need probably right around 2 sq. meters, which would be around 21 ozs total. One pound five ounces? Ain't too bad right? Same as my ground pad.

Or maybe I just need to man up and go with a thinner, lighter layer?
