Is "Rip stop" really needed in a tarp?

Just when you thought you heard the last of me and my quest for a heavy yellow tarp for my vintage HH expedition hammock.

The Ripstop pattern found in ripstop nylon and ripstop poly,,, is it needed in a tarp? or is it beneficial or just a gimmick?
Reason I ask is a found a perfect yellow color match in a 70 denier Nylon Taffeta with a 1 oz Polyurethane coating at the rain shed,, but not having "Rip stop" threads has me worried, should I be?
I have also found a 70 denier Nylon Ripstop with .5oz Silicone /PU Coating, but the yellow color is not an exact match.

    Thoughts?

    Many thanks,
    Slack

From what I understand is that the ripstop is only beneficial is you get a small hole, such as a stick poking though. The ripstop will keep the hole from getting bigger. It looks like in your case that could potentially be a problem, since your looking to get a heavier fabric for greater durability.
I am sure there are people who know far more than me that can chime in.

You should ask Kyle over at Rip Stop by the Roll, he is an expert in materials.

Plenty of people have made tarps out of the 0.9oz silpoly fabrics on the market, and I don't think any of those options are ripstop. I guess it depends on how much abuse you expect the tarp to take.

My tarp has no ripstop and it has held up well throughout the one time I've used it.

Most of the normal stress on hammock tarp fabric is tensile (pulling apart) rather than tear (ripping apart), so while a ripstop grid does offer a slight improvement in tear strength, it doesn't really matter in this case.

That's a very stout fabric to be using for a tarp anyways at ~3 osy, so you shouldn't have any issues.
