    Hoosier Hang 2010

I live in Indiana (5 years) and have noticed that there are quite a few Hoosiers on Hammock Forums. I've been thinking about getting a hammock hang going in the great state of Indiana and so I'm proposing that we do a hammock hang here - Indiana style. Now, there isn't any real hiking to be done in Northern Indiana, so I figured Southern Indiana (about an hour from Indy) would be an ideal spot to make it easier for anyone interested to come. An area that was mildly easy to hike would encourage new backpackers to come. We could come up with an stripped down itinerary and set this up, so those interested could make plans to attend. I was thinking April. April would help us to avoid bugs, increase the availability of water, and allow for more comfortable temperatures. If there was interest, we could do a little trail maintenance as a giveback to our community. Personally, I've never given back to the trail besides Boy Scout activities and would find it rewarding.

I was thinking of calling it - Hoosier Hang 2010. If we had enough participants, I'd be willing to have some T-shirts made and have the proceeds go back to support the HF website. Maybe this could also generate some interest to the hammocking cause in our area.

Please give me some feedback. Thanks, Trout

Mule, I and others have discussed the possibility a few times, but we always struggled with an adequate location.
I still have no good suggestions...
If I had to chose, somewhere in Charles Deam Wilderness area, probably Grubb Ridge trail north to Lake Monroe

    Hoosier Hang

There is alway the Adventure Hiking Trail in Obannon Woods State Park...

It is a loop, with one shelter and about 25 miles.. I dont know if that helps or not..

Also, there are a few good spots on the Knobstone to hang, in the valleys, and that would be very easy to drop a truck north and bring everyone back down south to their vehicles..

Anyway sorry for rambling... I am in as long as school permits..

    did they remark this trail?
I was down there 6-7 yrs ago and it was the hardest trail to follow I've ever been on and water was non-existant (of course, should be ok in April)

Knobstone would be good as long as you can find enough trailhead parking and again, that water issue

Trout...I'd recommend you decide what kind of hang you want. Car camping or little hike and stay put or backpacking (how many miles?)
Each type needs a different location and will attract different hangers

I'm close enough to Indiana to be interested if this is of the backpacking type of adventure....although the idea of setting down close to parking lots and doing trail work service has some interest and merit to it.

Knobstone is probably a no go because it's too strenuous for a beginner hiker and has poor water. I was thinking something like the Charles Deam Wilderness - I hear it's relatively flat. I've heard good things about the Adventure trail also.

The optimum plan would be to have easy access starting camp on Friday, so car campers could attend the first night. Depending on the camp/camp location, the Friday camp could be a everybody brings something gathering. Then hike on Saturday and Sunday easy milage, so beginners or those who want to bring a young adult could attend. However, three days of hiking easy miles is the other option I was thinking. The primary purpose would be to meet HF members in a hammock setting and enjoy the outdoors.

If you have a suggestion or ideas, please send me an email. I'll post a summary and we can go from there. Once a decision is made, I'll post directions, get maps for anyone who needs one, and so forth.

So far, I have four people down as interested.

Charles Deem sounds like a good plan. I'm in.

Bloomington is only a 2 hr (or so) drive for me. I haven't camped in Indiana in over 40 years, should be fun. Charles Deam seems a nice place.
That is if a Buckeye can join you Hoosiers
