    Brother CE-5000

My wife has a Brother CE-5000 which is underused so I will probably adopt it in the near future..
Does anyone have any experience using this machine for making hammock gear, tarps, UQ's?
Is it good enough for what I need or will I need a beefier setup?

That machine will be just fine. I have made quite a few items using a similar Brother PE-300S (see post 1357 in this thread) and it worked well. I have sewn 1.6 Argon, 1.1 sil, NoSeeUm on the Brother without issue. I have not tried webbing as I have used a heavier Kenmore machine for straps (and all the other as well).

It'll do just fine for lighter materials like sil and low denier ripstop, though I'd go slow with strapping and anything heavier while paying attention to it to ensure that I didn't do any damage. It may not have the same lifespan as an heavier machine, and all of the decorative stitches on it aren't really useful for a gear maker. However, if you already have the thing, you might as well use it.

Let us know how it goes!

Never thought I would post in this thread, but here is the window display at AllSaints, a clothing store in Las Vegas. Retro and glittery, like all good Vegas things.

There is what I think is a new in the box Kenmore sowing machine for $50. It is at the Goodwill store in Woodridge, Il. The store is behind the CVS that is on the corner of 87th and Woodward Ave.

I've been using a 1990s era Janome that was a hand me down. It's ok, but I just found the below beauty in my basement. The original owners (from whom I rent) told me that they don't want anything that was left. The toothed gear on the motor that attaches to the belt seems to be burnt out, but otherwise all seems good. It's solid steel. Motor runs, and I could hand crank the wheel just fine. A little TLC and I think I'll have a workhorse.
