There are many excellent Whites to be had for $50 and much less. All metal, and made before 1970. 30lb in the cabinet would be about right. That's a weight, in an era of true portables and iPads , that nobody wants to lift.

You need and want one with no more than zig-zag, but straight stitch only is fine.
All metal because plastic internal parts that fail on old machines are effectively irreplaceable.

Made in Japan? Excellent, if it is in good tune and makes good stitches forward and back. Better to be able to check the hook and bobbin housing for damage, but it if will sew nice stitches with light thread, chances are they are OK.

Probably covered earlier: If the machine hasn't been run for a long time,--decades? -- better to oil all bearing and turn it over by hand than to test it by running it dry. To find out before that if the motor works, better to disengage the clutch in the wheel so the motor is only driving the wheel

Thing is, you can pay more for a primitive foot pedal to regulate speed than you can for the machine.

That may be a late-40's into '50s model, a 15-91 that can sell for between $100 and $500. Go to ebay and find completed sales.

I'm writing this after driving a distance to get a designed-to-straight stitch only* Necchi, from 1954. I would like to think the stitch is better formed than on zig-zag machines because it is in my mind. But, I am grinning.

*As a against a machine which will now only straight stitch due to some malfunction of the cams or linkages.
