    Best Knotmaking Lightweight Tarp Cordage?

Recommended cord for a non-hardware continuous ridgeline for a tarp? Apparently, lash-it and zing-it are not so good for untying knots, while braided mason line tangles. I know there's a lot of people who use hardware, but I like doing knots--it impresses the ladies.

I also like the Lawson stuff. Sometimes the spectra core forms a little knob when you melt your ends. This can hang up and frustrate the slippery portion of your slippery hitches. You can easily overcome the condition by squeezing or wiping out the end of the line while the melt is cooling.

I'm not a hardware fan much either but I still stick with zing-it/lash-it for the ridgeline. I switched out my guylines to attwood micro cord. It's more than heavy enough for the application, holds knots well, and was pretty cheap. It's pretty stiff so it doesn't tangle or snag forest debris like mason cord.

For the ridgeline I just tie or use a micro-biner to connect to one tree and a "tarp key" to tension the other end (similar to some of the Dutch products). The tarp attaches to the ridgeline with some klemheist knots made from the micro cord.

For the Ridge line, I use a 3mm utility cord made by PMI and sold in 50 ft hanks by REi. For they guy lines I use Night-eze reflecting line - mostly because I bought a bunch of it before I learned about Lawson. I really like the reflecting line because it saves some tripping when returning to the tarp at night, but it doesn't reflect to other campers unless they are looking at the right angle with a light - that is, it doesn't light up the whole camp area.

I do use Figure-9's on the guy lines but the 3mm cord is easy enough if you wanted to make knots. Kind of a dilemma; if you want to tie/untie easily, you need a thicker line. But then you get into weight and bulk.

I believe that Shug and Grizz use Samson Spectra as it hold knots well. I have not tried it but it is on my list to buy.

I really like ZPacks Z-line for tie outs. Nice sturdy sheath, very strong, stiff and tangle resistant.

I use the 1.25mm and the truckers/McCarthy hitch. I like it, it's crazy light, and easy to work with. For colder months, I use a larger 2-3mm cord.

Marlow Excel Pro 3mm ridge and 2mm guy lines. Excel racing is a bit stronger, for a ridge, but overkill for guys. Knots and unknots well. Could be lighter I guess, but I think the handling makes up for it.

I'm in the Lawson Glowire camp. I run it through Braided Mason line Prussics, attached right on the D-ring or Pull out. The other end larksheaded to the stake, for a Hardwareless set up that adjusts from under the tarp in a down pour.

I'm still a fan of Kelty Triptease. 1.5mm braided nylon with Scotchlite reflective yarn and Spectra900 core. 188lb break strength @ 1.5oz/50ft.

takes and holds knots, easy to untie. not prone to tangle like mason's twine...
