How do you work this evil beast? (I think it's a Mayan)

Nope I can't do that once I get in. This seems to be a 12' single.

Depends on the length, usually they are 12' +. and they like deeper angles, like 45* +

Things got a little better once I got around 45°, but still nothing close to comfortable or a flat diagonal lay. I have a 16' span, the webbing was 7'+ up the pole and my but was 2-3" off the ground.

The wide Mayan ones are nice, but you aren't lying diagonally in them, more along the base of the troth, in your last pic -- at right angles to the hammock's length. I never tried a single one, though.

From that pic, it looks like a single. I'd say try different angles. maybe hang it from the pole to the tree ?
They are very very different from the gathered end hammocks, that's for sure.
