    tarp advice in Japan

I've hammock camped with my 11' Dutch hammock about 3 times now and love it. Warm weather here in southern Japan , but on my latest trip I ran into a little more rain and wind than I've been used to. My 338cm (133inch) Mont-Bell diamond tarp just doesn't give me the weather protection I need and it barely covers the ends of my hammock set-up. It is light at only 360 grams, but I'm going to sell it and get something else. What else is the question? I can get another Mont-Bell tarp at the same length 338cm but in a Hexa shape, but I think this will have only slightly better coverage. I would like a WB Superfly but it is close to $200 with shipping to Japan. I can get a Kelty Noah 12 for about $110, but it's a little big and heavy for what I need. Or take a chance and order something from aliexpress? hammock_camp_yakushima.jpg

Sounds like you've done your home work. The big tarps are the Superfly from Warbonnet , Winter Haven from http://www.simplylightdesigns.com, and the Winter Dream from http://www.undergroundquilts.com. Otherwise the Kelty is a good tarp albeit a bit heavy.

I wouldn't bother with AliExpress - dodgy quality and you'll probably be the first on the block to experiment. If I had to choose between Kelty Noah 12 x 12 at $110 and Warbonnet Superfly at $200, I'd choose the Superfly every time.

    Nice bike.

Are there any outdoors equipment stores or online suppliers in Japan? I have no clue what that market is like over there... Suppose you wouldn't be asking if there were choices to be had locally.

    Hi fellow Japan hammock fan.
I imported an Etowah tarp and really like it. I used it during my most recent trip and it covered my 11 foot hammock, but not a lot of room at either end. I am using the 8x10, but the 10x10 might be a better option. Etowah only charges $15 to ship to Japan, and I think they still have a sale on.

I have also been looking at getting one from a local maker.
You could probably contact him and ask him to make you one bigger or smaller than what he has listed on his site.

Finally, if you want to try making your own you can get supplies here in Japan from Outdoor Material Mart. I got my Tyvek from them.

I have really enjoyed using the hammock here in Japan, how about you?

Thanks for the replies everyone. GingaNingaJP, I might contact the ks-ultralight fellow, I think the L tarp (3mx2.5m) might work, but a custom 3.5x2.5m might be more ideal for an A-frame rectangle tarp. Prices seem reasonable. Would 30D silnylon pretty thin and fragile?

I like that list Tacblades. Especially with some of the bikepacking gear companies listed. I'm thinking it will be easiest and cheaper for me to pick up a hex version of the Mont-Bell, I think the extra hex coverage will be enough for me. http://en.montbell.jp/products/goods...uct_id=1122474
If not, I will try to source another tarp next spring when I go to the USA.
