I like gathered end so I can change the length easily and I'm all for less sewing. I also like that I can change the tautness of the edges of the hammock by how far you pull them out before you whip the ends. Some seem really deep and really cut into the backs of my knees.

I like to keep mine parallel for training purposes. I don't think it really matters though.
I'm a metal worker and for riveting, distances between rows and spacing is critical. Sewing not so much.
I should have said doubled over twice in my original post. I will edit it.

    Enjoy learning!

On a single-layer hammock, yes, the bug net will probably throw you the biggest curve ball. You're setting yourself up for success by keeping your net design fairly simple. Dave XTrekker (HF member) has a YouTube channel with some wonderful DIY videos on both single-layer gathered-end hammock construction and on attaching a zippered bug net. Be sure to check those out for inspiration, along with various relevant posts here on HF in the DIY Stickies forum.

I had a sewn end channel that ripped off my hammock this summer and I'm 170 pounds. It turns out I made two mistakes: I didn't make sure to space the three seams at the end far enough apart; and my stitching was too small. Go with long stitches and make sure they're far apart.

I just finished my first diy hammock and went with the RSBTR ~2inch rolled hem with 3 lines of stiching. Using 7/64 amsteel whoopies through the channel and dont see any odd wear or stretch so far.
