If I were making a bottom entry hammock I would probably overlap the edges of the entry slit to make sure I got a good seal.

I've been seriously considering trying to make a bottom loader with a 'trap door' - meaning two slits about 8 to 10" to either side of the midline of the hammock body and a slit between the ends of parallel slits . While I realize I'd have to do some serious reinforcement to make this work and would have to have some heavy-duty clips to hold the flap in place, I think it could be done.
The Velcro isn't really necessary to seal the bottom entry/exit.
It is my understanding that Hennessy didn't use the Velcro on the early models.
The Velcro is only necessary when the hammock is un-occupied.
If the hammock is occupied, then the entry/exit slit closes tight even without the Velcro.
What to do when the hammock isn't occupied and you don't have Velcro? As Pan Suggested, just dump some gear in there to hold the slit closed. Simple really.
