What about the other end of the hiking pole?
Oh yeah I forgot about the pocket
Wow this thread is never gonna die is it.
Still cant believe I'm posting on it. I used to be intimidated by this thread with all that math guru talk.
Trust me you don't need the math. It is pretty easy to make one.
Now what options and what add ons to put on it might make you go crazy.
The ring buckle thread has been in a coma for awhile.

I was wondering what poles you had whose end would slip into an SMC ring. Are poles with doctored handles Leki's? Maybe for the viewing public you could post a picture of the handle end?
I put a link to your post with the webbing pictures in the Guide, along with the links to other spreader bar solutions.
And yes, sewing webbing onto the ring is a PITA. In my case (for the PacerPoles) the strap was considerably longer, which helped a lot in getting the ring+webbing flat where it needed to be, and the rest of the webbing out of the way. With the comparatively short straps you've got, it's a wonder to me that you got it sewed by machine at all.
Grizz
Before and after shots of the grip end. The price of these Lekis made it easier to modify.
I did have to drill a small hole in the poles so the desired 36" spread could be attained. bhttp://www.campmor.com/webapp/wcs/st...0226&langId=-1
