    Florida New Guy..............

Hi, I'm new to hammock camping, made the switch to be able to carry all my stuff in a kayak.

I'm going to a "hang" in Oct. here in Florida and don't have a clue. It's a weekend and there will be some hiking.

What kind of stuff do I need to not look completely lame?Do the guy's who go eat freeze dried and filter water or is all optional?

It's 3/4's of a mi. hike in so I'll not want to make that trip too many times.

You can see where this is going.............HELP.

There are great hammockers in Florida--don't worry how you look--just go and have a great time--talk hammocks--look at different rigs--and drink up all their coffee!

Welcome to Hammock forums. Getting into this hammocking thing can be a bit confusing so a group hang is a great place to start. If you have to make a day visit if you do not have a hammock so you can see what is available. I've even seen newbie's camping in tents as they wanted to get educated before jumping in.

Hyoh- hang your own hang. There are no rules, do what you are comfortable with. Over the past couple of years I've figured out what works for me. My first few hangs I packed more than I needed because I didn't want to be without. I started leaving stuff at home that I did not use. A group hang will be an excellent way to see other methods of camping. Most hammockers are helpful laid back folks who are more than happy to show off their gear and how to use it.

There is no gear check bouncer. Bring what you think you need. A 3/4 mile hike is no sweat. Leave it in the car and go back if you feel you need it. Everyone packs to their fears at first until they learn what works for them. When I first started taking my kids car camping ( they were 5 and 6 at the time) you would have thought we were moving in for a week not a weekend. I was scared that u would need something and not have it. Most of the stuff stayed in the car though.
I have not been able to make it to group hang yet, but it always looks like those folks are having a great time.
