I don't know if I would go with the Blackbird as my first hammock. I'd probably get a simple, gathered-end Dutch hammock to start.

Dutch hammock w/ridgeline & Whoopie Hook suspension $87.00
    Fronkey bugnet $57.00
    HG Burrow 20 $249.00
    HG Phoenix 20 $199.00
    Warbonnet Superfly $140.00
    Total $732.00

If you maintain a 10* F cushion over expected lows, the quilts will get you to 30* F. If you can afford to get an UQ, I would. Use the sleeping bag as a topquilt. Pads are no fun, in my experience.

I agree with SS. regular gathered end hammocks are great. The Fronkey bug net keeps the set up versatile. Hard to beat HG quilts and 20 degree will get you through most temps. The superfly tarp will get you through pretty much any weather Mother Nature can hit you with (Hurricane Matthew not withstanding).
You certainly could go the DIY route with the hammock and bug net. That would save you some money. Definitely do not skimp on the insulation or tarp; they are what keep you warm and dry.

Only you can decide Dutch Hammock + items versus Warbonnet BB for a 1st Hammock. I went with the WBBB 1..1 DL with Straps and Buckles and never have changed - so it has my vote. Again, Superfly vs other Tarps has to be weighted out. I went with the less expensive Edge Tarp because I just wanted to get into the woods as cheap as possible. Be aware of hidden cost with tarps - Ridgeline, guy lines, type of stakes, and Dutch hardware to avoid knots and increase ease of set up, all come with a price tag. If mainly keeping above 30º, I would be more likely to try pads, DIY Sleeping Bags as Top Quilts, and and Edge smaller tarp. If going below 30º often or right away, I would go with a Superfly, Wooki, and the TQ would be my last item. Look at short term versus long term goals and purchases. I am still working on long term HG CF Winter Palace, but I still go out in all seasons currently.

If you already have a sleeping bag, just use that and spend your money on hammock, tarp and UQ.

TallPaul.I think that's the route I'm going to take.I'm sold on the Blackbird, I don't like buying 2 or 3 times then ultimately spending it later.Thx for the opinions folks.

You can't go wrong with this setup and if you do not like it you can sell it here for dang near retail.

    If You Had $800 bucks.

I've had extremely positive experiences with marty at Wilderness Logics. I'd recommend any of his products in a heartbeat.

Snipe hammock with ridgeline and whoopies - $120
    removable bug net - $80
    15 degree 3/4 underquilt - $200
    15 degree top quilt - $250
    tadpole tarp with a door - $150

that's right at $800, and the gear is top quality! I sleep in my Snipe hammock every night.

Shug also posted a review on youtube for the snipe hammock. I'd recommend checking that out too.
