20* UQ and the Frozen Butt Hang!

    Hey Y'all,
I have a predicament, I am a frozen sleeper, a warmer UQ is not in my budget for this year. Yet I want to go to the Frozen Butt Hang in Minnesota and Wisconsin. I have a 20* HG UQ, with 4 oz of overstuff. I am looking at getting a sock before then. I am looking for reasonable priced ideas to get thru the -teens to -twenty ish nights, outside of the warm water bottle, hand and foot warmers, exercising before bed, eating or drinking something warm before bed.

I would say bring a pad and a blanket too.
Or could work out that some one loan you a UQ so you could stack UQs.

No one has stepped up to plan and lead the Minnesota Frozen Butt Hang so far.
    Won't be me!
Hillbilly Deluxe did it last year and I remember him saying he would not take it on this year.

Cryofthewild already has the Wisconsin frozen Butt Hang date set, you are always welcome.

But I was told stacking quilts was not a good idea. I have a 30 degree Diy quilt how would I stack them... I think you should do a video on it.

    thanks Shug

Stacking is as simple as it sounds. Some say if you have a partial length and a full length, one way is better than the other as far as which one goes on the outside. I found no difference as long as they do not compress each other. Need to stay lofty.

Before I had a zero set, I stacked a AHE Jarbidge and New River UQ. They were 3 season and was plenty warm. Then I put one 40 degree sleeping bag inside of a 20 degree bag. I had an over cover but didn't need a water bottle or hand warmers. Covered by a Superfly tarp with doors closed. Took me below 15 degrees and I slept 9 hours which was long for me. Very warm.

I have done it with great success. I did a full length up against me and my partial UQ over that. Snug as can be.

    Hi,

In my modest experience, I can say that switching to a light foam pad instead of your underquilt when it gets too cold for the UQ, and then adding the UQ on top if it gets even colder works well. Pad in the hammock + UQ under the hammock definitely warms my butt.
In your case, I would bring two thick pads, as they were talking about -40 last year !!! To be honest, I do not have experience with such temperatures, I had to pile pad + 20°F underquilt at about 42°F.

Pros : A foam pad is relatively cheap and can be found anywhere. It can be used for other purposes as well.

I would be curious to see a picture of your 20° UQ with 4 oz overfill, as many say it is too much overfill.

I'd take this advice with a massive grain of salt - it's not something I've ever heard an experienced hanger advise. The Frozen Butt Hangs are not a place to experiment - you need to have proven (and hopefully tested) solutions.
