    Sewing baffle ends

I'm going to make my first down UQ over winter (his & hers set actually). I was experimenting with scrap fabric this weekend and made a model (two short chambers, only one end) to sort out just how I wanted to do everything and making sure I knew what order thinks had to be done in.

The only thing I found a little challenging was sewing the ends of the baffles. My first thought was to sew the ends of the baffles when I sewed the baffle to the outer shell. That seemed to make for pretty tight quarters sewing the inner shell to the baffle. I ripped the end out and sew the baffle fabric to the outer shell, on line, right up to the edge of the baffle fabric. Then I sewed the inner shell on and when I got to the end I wrapped around to close it off. That worked OK, though I didn't get my stitching lined up very well (not paying enough attention).

I'm curious as to what others are doing.

    I'm sloppy, but it works!
Sew the baffle material up to about 1" to 2" from the edge of the first side. Do the same for the second side. When you make the hem at each end, everything will be enclosed. Keep it simple & don't sweat it.

I'm all about KISS. That's why I asked a question after a couple attempts that didn't seem simple.

So the way you are doing it is the baffle material is sandwiched in the hem? or is there sort of a pleat inside where maybe just the point of it, where the shells meet, is open?

I have only made a couple of quilts so far but I just sew the baffles to the inner and outer shells. I have not worried about sewing the ends. I just do a rolled hem on the edges up to the baffles. I figure that the down will probably not migrate from one chamber to the next unless it is forced and I just don't see that happening.

There's a really good tutorial from a few years ago, in which the baffles are just sewn up to the ends, and then the ends pleated and sewn closed: Gidgetgirl's UQ

Then I saw one recently with "bathtub" construction, where the end of the shell was folded 90º and sewn to the ends of the baffles: TPole's UQ
(This entry also includes links to Gidgetgirl and others' UQ tutorials, very handy.)

I have not made any of these, but have been studying and plotting for a while!
