    I used to do that, but have gotten lazy. The small diameter zingit seemed like it would hurt the tree so I used straps. But since there's a lot less weight compared to a hammock I think it's OK without.

    I believe Tom Hennessy was the first person to coin the name tree huggers. As far as I know he was one of the first to make a piece of webbing with two loops for a hammock. He also is a great supporter of people using webbing on the trees. He has a campaign right now to have retailers such as REI to only sell hammocks if they come with webbing for the trees.

    Hopefully that campaign will be successful. I haven't seen it at REI but it's a shame what some of the hammocks at the big boxes come with for suspension.
