    Campgrounds near Birmingham

Going to GSMNP for Thanksgiving. We will be travelling through Birmingham via I20 from Meridian MS and then I59 north going up to Chattanooga. Looking for a spot to camp for one night to divide the trip up. This will be the Sunday night before thanksgiving.

Hanging spot preferred but not totally necessary. Not too far from the interstate but willing to go 30-45 minutes for a nice spot.

I would prefer stay on I59 north of Birmingham so the next day drive would be shorter.

If anyone has some campgrounds that they could recommend we would appreciate the info.

    TIA

http://www.tannehill.org/camping.html is a campground about half way between Tuscaloosa and Birmingham that has some primitive camping sites. It's been a while but we used to camp here and really liked it.

We stayed in Oak Mountain state park in Birmingham once on the way to Fla. Right off the interstate and feels like in the middle of nowhere. Check it out on www.googlemaps.com

+1 for Tannehill! That's my regular stop over spot when I'm driving to my Mom's in SC. Several of the primitive spots have good trees for hanging, and it's a quick in and out from the interstate. Plus the Petro truckstop at that exit has a great buffet for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Thanks everyone. If we can get a spot I think this will be our stop.

    No reservations.
