Comparing all models of poncho tarps

    hi all,

I need some input here and would be glad to hear your opinion.

Have post this doubt out there but think it would be best open a specific thread to avoid mixing topics.

After buy the hammock you guys reccomend me ( a single layer 2.4 hexon dutch hammock thats is simply amazing!) I am in search of a tarp that, as the hammock, also:

    1) live permanently in a pouch on my fishing backpack, to be used whenever necessary, so, it needs to be smallest and lightest as possible, since i will be carrying it as luxury item, that may or may not be used.

    2) function as poncho, to serve as rain cloth and protect my gear and pack. It is really necessary.

    3) provide some protection against rain when set up over the hammock as a tarp. Well.. as good as possible...

    4) pack as small and light as possible

Using some google fu, i found these products on the internet:

    Moonbow custom poncho 100usd
    Silnylon
    1.72x2.43m
    280 g

    ----------

After put all these models side by side, the moonboow looks like the best choice because it is wider, so it will cover more space.

Problem is that i know nothing about ponchos and its use as hammock tarps.

And the moonbow site doesnt offer any specs or pics of its products.

So i came here to ask for some help.

would anyone please enlighten me in the process of select a poncho tarp that fits all above specifications, from 1 to 4?

    thanks a lot!!

I kinda like the SMD Gatewood Cape design. I seen some DIY instructions somewhere. I think they're a bit over priced to buy. I really don't think there's much to it other then attaching the hood and minor shaping.

If you have an 11' hammock, your ridgeline will be 110"ish. So look for a poncho that is at least 120" (3.05m) on the diagonal. Remember your Pythagoras,
    Diagonal = sqrt(length^2 x width^2)
