Welcome to HF and hammock camping! I live in Pell City. There are plenty of places not far from where you are. Anywhere on the Pinhoti Trail is good, but I am especially fond of the trails that surround Cheaha State Park. I have hiked the entire Pinhoti and IMO it is a better place than Sipsey Wilderness to get some experience. Plenty of trail shelters(mostly on the Northern end), established camp sites, and moderate to difficult terrain.

I am way too new to this forum and hammock camping to be offering adivce, but I grew up in Brazil where hammocks were more popular than beds. Lots of babies made in those hammocks . . .
So many new introductions, I think I missed this one.
My girlfriend's son is living in Alabama these days. He sure seems to like it.

Wow, I think this is one of the best welcomes I've had on a forum. Thanks guys. I think this will be a good experience.
Thanks for the suggestions on places to go, too. I must have been living under a rock because it didn't occur to me that Alabama had 2 national forests. I think in the next few weeks we will do a couple hammock trials up at Monte Sano, and then once all the bugs are worked out we will try out Sipsey.
Welcome to our crowd. I live north of Ardmore part time, south GA rest of the time. Neo usually has a hang late April/early May, and again in early Oct, at Meriwether Lewis campground on the Natchez Trace, north of Lawrenceburg, TN. Should be about 1 1/2 to 2 hour drive for you. We welcome all, even some groundlings.
