    When is it TOO much?

What is the TOP end for a cottage vendor 30° TQ?
Are you going to be too warm in the fortie°s?

I need something for when it goes too cool for my CDT combo. Sort of something to "bookend" my three-season camping. I don't plan on hitting the freezing level often, but I can see going to the 40s/high 30s up in the mountains even seasonally.

You can easily use a 30° always up to 60° or more by simply covering up and sliding off. I've used my 20° to 70° before and it wasn't a problem as I left it at my feet an pulled it up when I needed it around 2am.

    Thx, slug.
I am still so used to thinking in the sleeping bag mode, where you are kinda constrained. [That's also why I am looking toward a drawstring/snap foot.]

A further question to the gurus: how much can you gain [°s] with a [CDT] over-quilt added-on?

At the recent LLG hang it went down to 27*. I used a 20* LLG uq with a modular CDT tq. That is, one inside the other with snaps around the perimeter. We found without the snaps it can be a real octopus to get back into in the wee hours. I did get a bit cool, but only from my knees to my ankles. After further inspection in the morning, we discovered gaps in the uq at the foot end which is entirely my fault for not double checking, especially after transferring from longer hammocks. I sleep hot but my wife doesn't and we threw everything else we had on her. She was ok after that.

Bottom line, for me, a pair of CDT tq's are comfortable down to freezing but I wouldn't want to count on them much below that.

Ok, thinking of building my under quilt, top quilt to 30* and carry a small blanket during the summer months. What do you think?
Any day in the Bush is better than a day at work!

    When is it TOO much?

I've used a 20 degree UQ in summer when it's warm and if too hot--just push UQ to side until about 300am and then just pull it back in place. If you have the money and the space at home--you can have several UQ at different temperature ratings. Good luck with all your choices!

You could use a 0 degree UQ in 65 degree temps. Just loosen it a little and vent it.

I used a 20 degree top and bottom quilt this summer in 55 degree temps. Just covered half of my with the TQ and left the foot box open. Hung the UQ loose and I was fine.

Every day is a good day.

I use my 0° up into the 60s, until the temperature is consistently warm enough to justify switching to my summer quilts, and it's a sewn foot box...I prefer the sewn footbox, and it doesn't hamper my ability to stick a leg out or only cover my chest if I need to cool down

My girlfriend's foster dog pissed on the bed just the other night so I had to sleep on the couch... I slept using my 20 degree EE Revelation top quilt. My house was probably 72 degrees farenheit. I think I nearly died from hyperthermia. I felt like I was sleeping inside of a lit fireplace next to the surface of the sun.

On the other hand, I bet I could use that same quilt outdoors in a hammock at 60-70 degrees farenheit and be OK... if that makes any sense. I could probably vent the TQ, UQ and/or adjust the tarp to allow for some windflow, etc, etc.
