    gram pinchin

Hi all. i have a UGQ underquilt which is FANTASTIC. but it has a lot of "strings". side bungees, end bungees and then there are the strings that hold the position of the UQ and prevent it from sliding down to a bunch, leaving the feet and head uninsulated. question is do i need this last bit? or can i ditch them and save a little weight and clutter?

I have seen videos where folks can easily slide their UQ up and down the side susp. with no additional 'trings. anybody have issues with this setup?

You can get by with a just the primary suspension, but it may not be the best idea if you ever have plans to resell and upgrade. If you add up the weight of those extra lines, it probably comes to maybe an ounce at the absolute extreme. I'm willing to bet you could find a better place to lose that weight. If you never have any plans or desire to sell or upgrade down the road, knock your socks off.

Well, leave the socks on for warmth...but you get the idear.

just watched the relevant Shug-video. sounds like i need them. primary susp stretches it up and under me side to side, 2ndary susp stretches it longways, maintaining good contact, which is critical to keeping the buttocks toasty. all hail the Shug.

If you really want to shave grams on the UQ you would probably be best served with a 4-corners instead of channeled suspension. UQs like the Jarbridge from Arrowhead and TeWa quilts use the style I'm referring to. You lose the easy centering ability, but that can be dialed in to your preferences by fine tuning shock cord length. I have a 20° TeWa 3/4 UQ I picked up from these forums, and it weighs in a hair over 12oz.

I will actually have it set up this weekend, so I'll try to grab some pics. It's really simple...just a grosgrain loop at each corner, and the shock cord ties off from there.

Me and your family are nearly neighbors! I am in NW OKC.

Ouichitas for backpacking, Wichitas for day hikes/car camping. Wish I had closer backpacking options, but it's not too bad a drive.

Glad you figured it out! I remember watching that video. I should have recommended it.

Hi bikecop, If you don't want to do the Arrowhead and TeWa shockcord corner attach method you could try making two long dogbones from amsteel and replace 3/4 of the shockcord in your UQ.
Of all the lines offered to campers shockcord is probably the heaviest.
Back when I was cutting buckles and straps from my gear to save grams the shockcord replacement was a significant savings.

Sorry I don't have many picture of what this looks like I also did not carry a camera in my gram worrying days, haha

What I am trying to show is the lite gray amsteel dogbone where the shockcord usually is in the primary suspension channel of the gold colored UQ. hth
