I made an attempt at turning an ebay bag into an UQ. It turned out to be a little heavy because the bag I salvaged was not top quality. However it was a good way to get my feet wet. Just realize you are not going to make a Crowsnest out of an old sleeping bag. Stormcrow uses the finest materials. If you calculate out his cost it isn't much more then the cost of materials. I personally make all my stuff, but that is because I like to. I really doubt I am saving any money. So either way you go you will win.

I'd agree with Dutch. DIY probably won't save money (or sanity), but is worth the effort IMO. I'm slowly making a topquilt with some of the down from Dutch's salvaged sleeping bag feathers(thank's Dutch ) and Stormcrow's down. There's something about taking raw materials and turning it into a usable piece of gear.

If your doing it to save money, as has been stated, there are LOTS of hidden costs. Sewing machine, thread, fabric...messed up fabric, etc. Plus the time you put into making the gear.

I've tried the sleeping bag slaughter route, and wasn't pleased with what I got. Personally, and this is only me .02 cents worth: unless your into DIY, save your money. Lots of gear makers out there. If you have a problem with something, the cottage industries on here are great to work with and will fix it. If you do make the gear, and it fails, you're on your own. But: HYOH!
