    Costco Quilt Questions

I plan to make a no sew top quilt with snaps ala Speedogomer. I have never worked installing snaps before.
Will plastic snaps work OK (lighter, warmer) or should I use metal?
Is a piece of reinforcing material needed between snap and quilt material?

For colder weather I want to use it together with my synthetic DD Top Quilt.
To be warmest in the cold, should the down quilt or synthetic quilt be on the inside?

    thanks

I would think that metal will feel colder to the touch?

I would imagine the down would go on top to prevent it from compressing?

    Good luck!

The plastic Kam Snaps work fine. In the case where you're likely not frequently snapping/unsnapping, I'd expect you'd be fine. Otherwise I'd be afraid of the snaps pulling out of the light fabric. For my modular CDT's, I first sewed on grosrain and installed the snaps through that, but these are intended to be snapped/unsnapped often.

Plastic Kam snaps will be perfect. Much more comfortable in use than metal. If you aren't too rough, I don't think reinforcement is needed.

I always stack my quilts with the synthetic on the outside. In cold/wet conditions, the synthetic handles the moisture better (from both the outside and from your own body). I personally also find that the more breathable down quilt is more comfortable close to my body than the less breathable synthetic. I, however, also sized my synthetic quilt a little big specifically so that I could layer it over my down without worrying about compression.

I suggest using a piece of grosgrain to reinforce the snaps. I have a modular UQ system using snaps that are not reinforced. The last time I camped, I hung the UQ too tight to the hammock and one of the snaps connecting the 2 throws pulled through the outer throw when I got in the hammock. Being careful can prevent most mishaps, but when your setting up in less than ideal circumstances, its easy for a simple oversight to happen. The grosgrain will give a bit of insurance for just these situations. On a side note, I was able to sew the 2 holes and repair the UQ without a major problem.

I like and use Kam Snaps. Lots of colors and sizes. But I don't yank the fabric to unsnap them. I use my finger nails on the snaps themselves, as per company instructions anyway.

The site says 20 is the most popular size. Memory is I took their advice. Also I ordered short prongs for thin materials.

I definitely bought plastic ones, various colors.

The plastic snaps work great. I have them on a Costco UQ, who also use them heavily on our cloth diapers for our kids. Held up with heavy use multiple times a day for almost 3 years now. The material will wear before the snaps.
