You mean if you're using the RRG quilt as an underquilt? If so, yes. Other than a PeaPod from Speer, I can't think of an insulation system that would allow you to go sans topquilt in any kind of cool weather.

Welcome creature! Hopefully we'll see you at one of the camp outs soon.
I too will something make and joy in it's making
@ Cannibal, Thanks very much for the suggestions!
@ OldMan, Good luck to your son, I wish him the absolute best! I went to Iraq for 13 months, and I can understand what he is going through. If you feel like you need to ask any questions about what he might be going through, or something else, please, feel free to ask, and I'll do my best to answer that.
@slowhike, I'd love to! I don't have a hammock yet, or really any of the main things other than a pack I bought in Germany when I was stationed there. It has an internal frame, and weighs about 5 lbs (haven't cut straps or "lost" any excess weight). I'm still tossing around the idea of the HH Asym, and the WBBB with a DIY RRG quilt. Tedinski pointed out that I could get the HH right now with free snakeskins, and a scout for free when I buy one. Seems appealing. Were you referring to the hang out in Uwharrie NF on Jan 8 - 10?
Don't sweat that! If you want to attend a hang, just post in the thread for that hang that you're interested in attending, but have no hammock set-up. Part of the reason for these hangs is to bring former groudlings into the fold. I'm willing to bet that a solid system can be pieced together for you by the hammock veterans attending. Our people are very good at sharing.
Trust nobody!
Heya Creature!
I haven't built my cold-weather insulation yet, but if someone else can chip in an UQ, I can mail you a HH to try out. That way you'll know before you have to buy.
Let me know ASAP, OR if somebody else (who will be there -- it's too far for me) will be bringing extra gear, that'd work too!
Welcome to HF, Creature!
The Uwharrie NF hangout is actually going to be the weekend of Jan. 15th-17th at Yates Place camp, 5 miles west of Troy. You are more than welcome to come if you can, hammock or not.

oh cool, I thought it would be a major faux pas to bring a tent. This thing is a beast though, 9.5 lbs. There wont be much hiking with that weight. Still haven't bought a sleeping bag either. Still doing research on those, because I don't want to waste money on a nice bag, if it wont be needed when I hang around. Any thoughts?
I've got an HH Expedition and an HH Explorer (not the newer UL models) that you can try out if you'd like. I'm sure we can cobble together a setup for you (top quilt, underquilt, etc.) between us all.
