    Thumbs down Super sized amsteel

I am impressed by the min. strength rating of 7/64" amsteel (1,400 lbs), and will be using some for my first hammock. My wife can't fathom relying on something so slim, and I told her that it's going to be a double hammock and she was going to hang with me!

I discovered that Sampson Rope also makes a 6 5/8" version, rated at 4,410,000 lbs average strength, Min 3,969,000 lbs. I guess that might be a bit of overkill

Get 1/8 if she's worried. It costs a bit more but has 2500 lbs breaking strength. Also tell her that the weight of the occupant is divided by two since there are two ropes.

On the two people one hammock note. It's not very comfortable so I would just get her a hammock for herself.

We use 8in. for towlines for ships when I was in the USCG.

I'm not sure if you're asking for a vote of confidence but the Amsteel at 1400 holds up great on my hammock. I frequently have me and my two kids in my hammock at the same time (all of us only total about 200 lbs) and they are jumping and horsing around. I made woopie slings/toggle combo and have loved the adjustability and ease of set up.

As mentioned. Go 1/8" or do straps if she's more comfortable with that.
The only hammocks that I seen that would be comfortable for two people would be the xxl Mayan hammock. But not very practical for outdoor camping

Wow, that is some thick line!

Nah.. I had thought of ordering the 1/8" from Dutch but I haven't read of anyone falling because their 7/64 amsteel failed. I never knew about it before I started surfing this forum, and can think of lots of use for this type of rope.

Can make all kinds of goodies with amsteel. I try to keep 25 feet or more on hand at all times.

I don't think that 7/64th Amsteel will be your fail point, unless you knot it do something else to the Amsteel that you shouldn't. I feel like the fabric would let go before the Amsteel. I've had we'll over 400 pounds in a 1.6 HyperD gathered end I made. It has 7/64th Amsteel whoopies on it I made, and uses Amsteel soft shackle to connect to my tree straps. I've had up to 3 separate hammocks on one 7/64th soft shackle.
