That will work fine. I use a 90/14 most of the time with Mara 70 thread, and built a MEMBRANE silpoly tarp using that setup with no problems whatsoever.

There are two main things you need to consider:
1) Is the needle strong enough to go through the material? Pretty much any needle will work with these light weight materials. size 80 (12) is fairly standard, and will work unless...
2) The needle size needs to match the thread size. What size thread are you using? For insteace if you're using coat's and Clark outdoor thread, it's very heavy and need's a large needle - like size 110 (18). If you're using Mara 100/Sew-all a size 70(10) - 80 (12) is the recommended size.

Hi Boston,
I will be using the Mara 70 from ripstop.

Recommends size 90 (14) - 100 (16)
Also, always start a project with a sharp needle and check to make sure it hasn't dulled.

Perfect. Stopped by Joann's on the way home and picked up a new set of titanium needles on sale for $5.99
Do I remember right that you had a post a while back on your tarp?
I am planning on using the flat felled/french hybrid on the instructions from Kyle (Ripstop), but I think you used the Warbonnet method.
what are the advantages/disadvantages of each?

The bigger issue is the slippery weightless nature of the fabric. It's hard to hold. Get a helper if you can

I just finished a .9 oz Membrane Silpoly tarp. My preference is Gutermann Tera 80 with a Microtex 70/10 needle.

"....The thinner Tera threads are great for ripstop nylon as this fabric has a tendency to pucker - so the thinner the thread, the smaller the needle and the least amount of pucker. In that case, Tera 80 (Tex 35) is perfect...."

Sew all gutterman (MAarA 100) with a 90/10 is another option?
I am getting argon 67 and 90 for a quilt build and I'm not quite settled on thread choice - intoo already have MARA 70 but have considered 100 ("sew all")
