    Climashield or Climashield XP

Looking to build an underquilt soon and was window shopping insulations.

ThruHiker has Climashield XP 60" wide listed as 6oz and 1.2" loft.

OWF has Climashield (no qualifier) 60" wide listed as 6oz and 1 3/8" - 2" loft.

What's the difference? Is the XP the new stuff and just as much insulation value at 1.2" as the other is at 2" or is the 2" going to work better just because it's 2" no matter what?

Can anybody tell me nuances of difference in these?

    Thanks.

    Robert

Just to give you another place to look, check out the rain shed. got mine there cheaper than the other places. plus it had more thicknesses.

I just checked therainshed.com site and they don't list Climashield insulation on their website. They have Primaloft sport and thinsulate.

    Cheers

The 60" listed at OWF is ClimaShield HL. I've not used it, but was talking to AYCE about it and he said it was fluffier than XP. Not sure how that would work being compressed over and over again.

I suggest going to the Climashield web site and looking at the comparative insulation claims for the various CSs. Last I checked, XP is the warmest CS for a given WEIGHT, regardless of thickness. Though I can't remember the details, 2.5 oz of XP will be warmer than 2.5 oz of any of the others, at least by a small amount. Even though 2.5 oz of the High Loft might be thicker.

What about the newer Climashield Apex? I have read good things on Climashield's website, but haven't seen it anywhere for for sale or used by the DIY crowd. Anyone here have some experience with it?

Allegedly the Apex is the replacement for XP and HL. It comes in lighter weights but is supposed to be warmer and more durable. I plan to get some in the next few weeks to upgrade what we have been using. I should know more in the next week or two.

I didn't see the XP at all on the Climashield web site and all of the descriptions seem fuzzy to me. I can't really distinguish any of them based on their descriptions except that the Apex is the most thermally efficient.

What is the loft on a KAQ? Regular or XP?

    Thanks.
