When using the 70 thread make sure you use the proper needle. The smallest to leave a hole is a #16. The larger the number the thicker the needle and therefore bigger whole.

Thanks for the pointers on the needle size. That was something I been getting confused about.

Amigo pro is discontinued thus the reason I'm trying the diy version.

Another way (easier, cheaper and lighter) to make the bag would be to simply fold over a hem (fold twice) and sew around 2 or 3 times. You might have to make some small tucks in the hem but that shouldn't be an issue.

Would the fabric alone be enough to support the grommet with shock cord? I'm going for around 5 L +/- a bit.

I use the Guterman 70 thread that comes with my RSBTR orders. Its pretty good stuff. I've also used embroidery thread. It's pretty strong too, and it has that shiny embroidery thread look. It comes on decent sized spools, too.

If you want heaven thread you want to go to T90 but your need will have to be size #19. Although remember that the bigger the needle the bigger to hole in the material if you are trying to make it water tight. I would stay with 70 and fold over the seam 1/2 inch and sew two times.

I use the Mara 70 for everything, basically because I have a lot of it from my RSBR orders. It could be considered overkill for a stuff sack, but it doesn't hurt anything IMO. I've used it for stuff sacks, quilts, tarps, and packs with out any issues as yet. I use 90/14 Sharp Microtex needles 90% of the time. Gutermann recommends a 90/14 or 100/16, and I prefer the smaller hole.

I'd count on seam sealing your water bag. I think that the grommets would hold, but only one way to find out. I use these grommets for backpack applications - I like these because they don't bite in to the fabric. I use a soldering iron to create a hole just big enough, then snap them together:

Thanks for the pointers. I was wondering how I was gonna make a hole. I thought about heating an awl but that's a much better way.
