I fold mine, it definitely packs smaller this way.
I have a rectangular tarp, though, it may not be as simple with other shapes.
I have always folded my DIY sil tarp to a width that fits in my pack, then rolled it up. Worked great for me until the last time out when it was windy & wet. Couldn't fold it over the ridge line because of the wind, and didn't want to lay it out on the ground because all the dirt and leaves would have stuck to it. Made me think about skins again just because they work in all conditions. Yeah, might hafta make me some....

Double ended mesh stuff sack here...
I always air dry before storing it, but the mesh lets it air out a little.

Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

I use the cuben snakeskins for my HG CF tarp. My sil tarps get unclipped from my ridgeline then folded and/or rolled up. If they're wet, I put them in a ziplock and stash it in an outer pocket.
I rarely use stuff sacks. I use 2-3 mil heavy duty compactor or contractor bags to separate my items in my pack and just stuff them in my bag. I use snake skins for my tarp and just stuff it in the compactor bag. This allows me to make use of all space in my pack. With stuff sacks there is always negative space that isn't filled.

I try to go with as small a tarp as possible and like to be able to use the mesh pocket in the front of my backpack. Ergo, I fold my tarps most of the time and avoid using a stuffsack if at all possible.
I like snake skins alot but don't use them because they add weight.
IMO, sil is easier to stuff and some folks worry that their Cuben gets a soft wadded/used look if they stuff them...and are worried that creases will form if they fold them.
When I fold, I try to vary the pattern to limit wear and tear. Once you start stuffing cuben it starts to look fluffy...hey there's a squirrel!
