It's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

When I'm expecting the temps to get down into low 50s, upper 40s (F) & below, I do.
I could get away w/o an Under Quilt at some of those 40s & 50s, because the DAM is all I really need on the bottom, but the addition of an UQ takes care of the sides as I "side sleep" & press my back & knees against the sides of the hammock. The underquilt just makes it one warm, cozy package.
A Segmented Pad Extender (SPE) from Speer Hammocks will do the same thing though.
I too will something make and joy in it's making

You are the only example I know of that illustrates what Pan was speaking about, how an UQ does best if one sleeps centered in the hammock.

First, Thank you for your service to this great country. I really appreciate all you do for us!

Glad to hear you'll be returning home soon. I'm in San Diego, and looking to tryout my new Lost River underquilt... If you're interested in an overnighter somewhere local, let me know!

My DIY hammock is 1.9 ripstop from Ed Speer (speerhammocks.com) he was cheaper than anything I could find locally, I'm 212lbs, no problems so far...

I have a sleeping bag I cut into an underquilt. It's plenty warm at 50 degrees. You'll need some cord locks and shock cord for suspension (maybe a pair of micro carabiners...) The sleeping bag is a bit heavy for backpacking, but would work well for car camping... It's far from perfect, and could use a little sewing in a couple of spots, but it works...

I live in San Carlos/La Mesa...

    John,

I used to live in lemon grove but now I'm stationed in Norfolk. Hope to hang on the AT sometime in Feb or March.

Someday, I'll have to make a trip to section-hike the AT... sounds much more friendly than the PCT...

    Have a safe journey...

Hiking the PCT is on my to do before I die list. It's in my backyard compared to the AT. If I'm 60 when I finally get around to it, so be it.

I grew up in the Kern River Valley in California, so the PCT was a favorite as a kid. We used to hike and camp in Kennedy Meadows a lot when I was younger. I miss the PCT, but I'm looking forward to section hiking the AT as time allows...
