as was previously stated, there is almost no benefit rom using anything smaller than 2x4's since this rig is already to heavy to carry much farther than from the garage to the yard or from the car to the campsite.

The weight and time involved is the reason I bought one. I also wanted one that could be torn down and transported easily. Mine weighs 50 lbs. But it comes apart into 4 pieces, fits into the trunk of my car with lots of room to spare, and is adjustable from 10-14 feet. It cost me $130 or so, but is worth it to me.

It is important though that the poles be reasonably sturdy. I'm not sure of the exact math. Each pole will probably have to support about half the weight which will be in the hammock.

I haven't tried this yet myself, but I'm planning on trying it with a couple of Wal-Mart cheapies.
You know you're nuts, right? Let us know how it goes after surgery. They say a broken hip isn't THAT painful, really. On the serious side, IMO, I'd never even consider trying something like that. The poles, particularly Wally World cheapies, wouldn't support the weight. Then going on to raise the poles to accomodate the height issue probably wouldn't work because of the weight as well. IMO, this idea is just asking for pain, trouble and general suffering for anyone who's foolhardy enough to try it.

I've seen some sturdy tripods and scaffolds made with lashed bamboo. I've never tried it, but it looks very feng shui.

Those bamboo forests in samurai movies just seem like hammock land.

There's an idea for the tutorial videos (are those EVER going to happen, btw?) - dub them like the old martial arts movies

I wonder if this could be adapted to fit a full sised adult hammock?
It would be big/heavy but honestly i think most of the people in this thread are more interested in the physics/engineering/design aspects than the accuall use anyway.

I am going to be buying a video camera in the near future.

I like the cheesy Kung Fu flick idea. Wu Tang Clan presents:Rise of Shaolin Hammock Style.

I've always wanted to dress up a like an 80 year old Chinese man with one of those super long goatees. I can hear the sound effects now.
