How To Make An HG Phoenix 40 Work In 20 Deg Wx

    All,

I use a Blackbird XLC and made a Newbie mistake as you would expect a guy who became a hammock lover 8 months ago and facing the challenge of autumn temps to do.... I bought a great quality 40 deg underquilt that I now wish were warmer now that winter is upon us! While I'm not planning to follow in Shug's snowshoe steps and try for a -40 deg outing, I expect to get out 2 or 3 weekends in the VA/WV mountains. Is there a reasonable, less expensive alternative to spending nearly $300 on a winter UQ, ...perhaps a way to add another layer of something? Also, if I add a thermarest pad between me and my UQ will I negate the benefit of the down UQ? Thanks a lot for any helpful advice you might offer. Happy Holidays to all! John

You can use the pad with the underquilt, that should get you lower. Supplementing an UQ with a pad is an easy way to get lower.

You can also use an underquilt protector to block some wind, which helps a small amount. You can also add a hammock sock for a few degrees of warmth. Both those only add a small amount of warmth below you.

You could also get a cheaper quilt, and stack the quilts.

You could also buy some DIY supplies and make your own winter quilt.

Every day is a good day.

I've read of people having good results with vapor barriers. I've been thinking of trying one of these.

Also, as far as an underquilt protector, I'd go with a Therm a Rest Slacker hammock warmer. I has a reflective inner lining which really enhances the effectiveness.

A wider pad is sold by GossamerGear and can be trimmed to size. Pads can be bulky, and have condensation, and reduce your hammocks comfort slightly. But a pad might be the cheapest, and most reliable insulation you can get. I had a GossamerGear 40wide by 72long by 3/16 thick pad and no wind gets through and you don't slip off the edge due to its size. In about a hundred days--it will be warm again--good luck until then.

If you try anything as a supplement test it out many nights first before depending on it in the field.
Biggest thing is too watch out for condensation issues as temps drop

Best thing to do is save the pennies for the 20* UQ at least..if that means waiting a yr then wait before venturing.
You have entered the rabbit hole and on your way. In no way have you made a mistake buying the 40* but you realize you want to do more and that just requires more gear to match. Be patient and you will be happy, safe and comfy on the trail....cold weather is not to be taken lightly.

Merry Christmas - thanks for the advice - I bought a 25" wide therm-a-rest reflective pad that I haven't tried with a UQ yet; thinking it would block the warmth of the down UQ. I'll give it a try and keep an eye on the condensation.

Merry Christmas - good advice! I have a 2QZQ UQP protector and just bought a $40 down throw blanket via Amazon that I'll put on top of the UQ. I'll definitely continue my backyard field tests prior to heading to the snows of WV!
