    New to Hammock life!

Hi, my name is vaughn. I love to camp, and play paintball. Rico is my paintball radio handle.*name is from the lil penguin on Madagascar*

Anyway, I have been watching Youtube videos for some time. There is this crazy guy called Shug that is always talking about Hammock Forums.net And he has some awesome videos about his hammock trips. I decided I need to try and make a hammock*as I am a broke college student..* I got some rip stop nylon in the dollar a yard section of our local fabric store, and I had some military para cord I could tie the hammock with. I found a video on youtube that told how to tie a hammock.. no sewing required!! It took me a little bit, but I got it tied and hurried outside to hang it up. I was surprised how comfortable it really was. I sat and layed in it for awhile, then my daughter, she is 12, then my wife had to come try it out. She was the most scared of all of us to try it, but once she got layed down she loved it. Everything was fine, until both my daughter and I sat down in the hammock. the cord snapped and sat us both down on our rears... I will be going to the store tomorrow to get some good big rope to tie it with. I have also came here to search for better ideas on making my hammock. Cant wait till I get it right and can go camping with hammocks. Anyway, that is my first hammock story, hopefully wont be my last. Nice to meet yall.

Welcome to the forum Vaughn. There's a whole DIY section on the forums for everything from hammocks to tarps and under quilts and woopie slings. If you found your first effort comfortable just think how it will be after you get a bit more info on how to optimize your rig. It will only get better. Cheers

    Welcome Rico.

A snapped paracord suspension is a common newbie mistake. You're in good company.

Thanks for the reply's, I think I will like it here. I have been searching for ways to better tie the hammock. I like the gathered end hammock. Just have to learn to sew. Going to try and make a woopie sling, found a page that showed them. Im guessing that is what takes some of the weight from the ropes you hook to the tree's.
Shug. My wife and I love your vids. Very funny stuff. Also like the bluegrass music. Im trying to learn how to play the banjo and guitar.
Any suggested reading or videos on making a hammock would be appreciated. There is a lot to read on here. I found something called a hammock chair too! Got to try and make one of those. I have a lone tree in the back yard that needs a hammock chair in it.

    To make a hammock ... nothing beats JustJeff's Site....http://www.tothewoods.net/HomemadeHammock.html
Good luck on the instruments ...... remember ... 20 minutes practice at a minimum EVERYDAY. Set a timer. do it in the eve or morning coffee. But everyday and you will be picking in 6 months to a year.

Shug's videos are quite entertaining, but if you listen real close..... and close your eyes.... and try to tune out his schizophrenic personality switches (sling boil is the best) he is a wealth of knowledge...
