Wow, I just saw this! Glad I took a look in the hangs section! First big hang I've noticed in my backyard, LOL....Is there still room for a first-timer?!

The mountains have a cool breeze that comes down and settles in the hollows at night. So it may say it's gonna be 55 degrees but feel more like 45 and be damp with heavy dew by early morning unless we have a cloud cover. So be prepared.
the coldest night I ever spent in my hammock was last June17 hanging behind the Barn at the Overmountain Shelter. never underestimate the effect elevation and humidity can have even in summer...

Well, I went ahead and signed up....Let me know if that's not okay (if you're at capacity already). I'm close, LD, so let me know if you need anything local!! I will also plan to bring my 12-string....just don't expect too much, LOL. Very exciting!

That's absolutely right Secondmouse! The warmest place on a mountain at night is not at the bottom or the top of a ridge but in the middle. I go up behind that barn in the hawthorn trees to hang and it gets you out of that cold spot.

Thinking this hike might be too much driving & time - would have to wake up too early to make it work, and that's not my thing, LOL. Depending on the weather, if clear then maybe an out and back hike from Carvers Gap including visits to Overmountain shelter and the top of Grassy Ridge Bald. If threat of thunderstorms, then maybe a long hike from Carvers Gap to Iron Mountain Gap, the latter being only 15min from camp. Would like to see who might be interested in these longer hikes on Sat.
