Hosts for the hang: Karla "with a k" and the Ice Age Trail Alliance (IATA)

    Friday, August 25 @ 3pm until Sunday, August 27th

Location: Ice Age Trail - Clover Valley Segment:
Address for your GPS: 9371 Island Dr Whitewater, WI 53190 coordinates: 42.790936, -88.766061

    What makes this hang different?
Each year, volunteers from throughout the upper Midwest gather at events across Wisconsin to build the Ice Age Trail, spend some time outside and connect with each other. We are joining one of the building weekend events. It is your opportunity to give back to this 1,100 mile trail maintained mainly by volunteers.

A quick synopsis for our weekend is we are building 200-300 feet of new boardwalk at the Clover Valley Segment. They are looking to draw volunteers 10-20 folks a day for the build. A base camp will set up nearby, location is TBD.

Cost: There is no cost and meals are provided on Saturday by the IATA. Everyone will need to pitch in for meal prep for the Friday group and our Saturday meals. We will potluck for the Friday dinner and Sunday breakfast. The IATA will have a camp kitchen set up with stoves, pots and pans, utensils, wash station, etc.

Our Saturday will look like this:

    6:45 – 7:15 – Breakfast
7:45 – 8 - Head out to the work site
Noon – Lunch in the field
4:30ish – Pack up and head back to camp
    6:30 – Dinner

There will be a separate on-line registration for this event with the IATA. Dave Caliebe, a Trail Program Specialist, will pass along that info when it’s ready (probably end of January)

This build runs Thursday, Friday and Saturday. We will only be working on Saturday, but if you desire to work on Thursday or Friday also, just indicated that on the IATA registration. Again, there is no cost and they provide the meals on days you work.

Thanks for posting this. I would love to be there to give back, as I hike the IAT at least every weekend. I have not as yet signed up, I need to find someone to watch my dog for me before I can commit to being there.

I hope you are able to make it. I wanted to give back since I've hiked on the IAT also, but not hiked it every weekend!! I'm jealous!

With all the warm weather we have had I have been out on the IAT everyday since Friday. Some areas are pretty muddy but still nice to get out there. Just a fyi the ticks are out already. I found 1 on my dog Saturday and Sunday, 2 while on the trail yesterday, and another 2 when we got home.

I was able to get out and camp in January along the IAT near Delafield (at Lapham Peak) and it was really muddy. That's my nearest IAT point.

Thanks for the heads up on the ticks. I certainly would not have thought they are out already!

    Cool Warm winter thoughts

In my experience any time the temp hits the upper 40s and sunny there is a chance of ticks. The warmer, the more likely.

Ticks in February in Wisconsin is a bit unusual. What else is unusual this year is male woodcock up here already. The earliest that I can recollect having seen timberdoodles in SE WI in previous years is March 3rd. The three I saw today were only feeding, yet soon they will be making their distinctive peents. Then it will be official: love is in the air!!

And another unusual occurrence is the robins never left. Yet another is frogs singing last night. I have NEVER seen either happen before.

Half a dozen bird species have been singing their Spring territory songs for several weeks now. Pretty mild/wild winter!!
    (insert pithy quote here)

It was so awesome to meet you and your dog at the hang last weekend. Great to put a face and name together!
