i felt a little chilled when my feet or arm smashed up against the side of my hammock. i wish i could afford an underquilt,
It sounds like you just need to have a pad for your shoulders. Something like the Speer SPE would help hold the pads in place. I used pads for years, I would use 2 pads in a "T" shape. The pads block the wind which is a plus. UQ's are nice I admit but pads can work very well also. I slept through some nasty storms using pads in my Clark with the advantage of not having to worry about my UQ getting wet etc. The important thing is to get out there and hang safely and pads can accomplish this well.

Now I will go out and in my hammock with a 2/3 UQ that also requires the use of a pad.

    2nd Test

Sorry for being so late in posting this, but today was the first day back at work.

Using the same sleeping system as the previous test, I added the AHE Bear Burrito Oven topcover. I must say that once i climbed inside the hammock and got settled in under the TopBlanket, within minutes I was nice and toasty. Almost too warm...

I peeled off my Capilene III shirt and put on a long sleeve synthetic shirt. Putting on a long sleeve synthetic shirt, I climbed back under the TopBlanket to warm back up. It didn't take very long to warm up.

Fell asleep at 10:30 pm, and stayed asleep until 4:45am... Was nice and warm until I climbed out of the hammock.

Will try another test Friday night. The current forecast for White House has it getting down to 9 degrees, and 1 - 3 inches of snow on the ground from Thursday.... WOOHOO!!!

I have my gear set up for tonight- brand new speer-type doubled nylon hammock- 2 pads in pocket of hammock, with foam turned sideways to cover shoulder areas, eureka recangular bag as pea-pod substitute, underquilt prototype under hammock inside of SB, and down mummy for TQ. (I am somewhat worried there won't be any room left for me in the hammock!)
skies are clear, wind is light, predicted low is headed for 14F - possibly a record for these parts.and if all else fails- the house is 40 ft away!
    hope this works... KM

Loads of Snow & another test night.

Have 6 inches of snow on the ground here in Middle TN with about 1/2 inch of ice under that. Assembled the following kit up this morning for sleep test tonight:

    Speer Winter Tarp
    AHE Bear Burrito Oven
    Speer TopBlanket III
    Warbonnet Blackbird dbl 1.7
    Speer Snugfit

Clothing is synthetic short sleeve t-shirt, Eddie Bauer down jacket, synthetic pants, Capilene II pants and wool socks.

Upon setting it up, I decided to climb inside. Took the down jacket off Temp was 24 degrees with a wind chill of 14. Was nice and toasty.

Will post the results of tonight's test in the morning...

I am in for a TN test tonight also. My 8 yr old daughter saw me setting up and begged me to put her hammock up too. Some pics below of us getting ready to test some gear. Well I am going to test. She will have lots of loft and be guaranteed to be warm. I am going to test the UQ discussed in this thread to see if I can find the low temp capability. http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...1&postcount=71

If I hit the bottom I will change out to more loft or just steal one of Leigh's 2/3 UQ's she has stacked up on the sewing table.

Made it to 12* last night. 8yr old daughter slept till about 6am.
The first UQ (http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...1&postcount=71) made it to about 16* before starting to feel some cold creeping thru. This is way past what I expected from a quilt with only 1" of loft. I went in and stole one of Leigh's quilts off of her sewing table and was toasty the remainder of the night.

Cool deal! Both on the quilt performance and on the hanging with your daughter. Time well spent in these days of kids glued to their cell phones and Nintendos...
