This appears in today's Lexington Herald-Leader for anyone who's interested:

TRAILS REOPENED, BUT CARE WITH CAMP FIRES URGED

Portions of two Red River Gorge hiking trails that were closed because of an out-of-season forest fire late last week have reopened. A total of 3 miles of Bison Way Trail and Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail were closed after an escaped campfire spread to cover 68 acres. A brief rain helped extinguish the fire. "Wildfires are extremely rare for this time of year, but the drought has set the stage for unseasonal fire occurrence," said E.J. Bunzendahl, unit fire management officer on the Cumberland Ranger District of the Daniel Boone National Forest. He urged campers and hikers to be careful with campfires, keeping them small and attending them at all times.

That's the SAME WAY it happened on Bambi. Those darn humans left their campfire unattended after a day of taking potshots at apparently anything that moved in the meadow.

Thanks for the update. I tried to find more info after I heard the blurb on the news, but nothing came to light. Only 68 acres? That not as bad as the news initially reported, which was over 100 acres and still burning.

If I get a chance I may head to the area for a day hike to survey the damage.

I never saw the initial report on it, but it's not as much as I would have thought it was. A day hike or an overnighter to the area might not be a bad idea, just to check out the damage like you said.

Hey now, this is serious business... only you can prevent forest fires. (Ok, actually you and everybody else)

be thankful it's only 68 acres. the fire in linville gorge continues to flare up & burn & has burned about 3000 acres now.
it's a beautiful place to hang too, but it's going to take it a while to recover.
I too will something make and joy in it's making
