I was watching the news and learned that there is a wildfire at the Red River Gorge, in the exact same area where we camped. The fire is like 3 miles wide and already burned 100 acres. Sad news. It was started by a campfire and has closed Bison Way Trail, Sheltowee Trace, and Indian Staircase according to the news.

My wife and I were going there Sunday for a day hike so I could show her the IS and the rock house.

    So much for LNT, huh?

yep, large areas of one of the nearest wilderness areas to me (linville gorge, about 2 & a half hour drive) have burned recently. the first of three fires was believed to be caused by careless campers, the other two fires by lightning.

    That's sad.

Maybe it needed a good burning though. Give it 10-20 years and we'll see.

Total bummer, I knew I should have called in last weekend and went with HC and Doctari. I was going to go for an overnighter tonight, but guess that's a no go now. I'm sorry to hear such a pretty area is burning like that.

    ****!
So, any links to current reports? I can't find any & Cinti news hasn't deemed this disaster important enough to even mention it.

I hope the damage isn't as bad as I'm imagining it to be!

it seems that fire is usually a good thing in the long run, but boy, it sure can take a long time for the land to recover.
linville gorge, nc had a big fire in 2000 or 2001 & those areas are still pretty ugly.
i'm sure there are a lot of variables in how quickly an area will recover to the point of eye appeal.
