While under quilts seem to be the preferred insulation method they aren't cheap.

For the money the SS does a nice job. Here on the forum we often question how the SS can keep people as warm as it does with such a thin layer of insulation. Be sure to put a space blanket over the foam pad to act as a vapor barrier.

I used one when i had a HH...it did not work good for me...i could never stay warm....and had bad condensation problems while using it...i know a few others that had this problem too....
not saying it won't work for you...there are many ppl that use the SS and love it...but for me it did not work at all...

when ppl ask me would i buy one again...i would say for me no...i rather a quilt..

your could get a 2/3 under quilt form AHE for $125 ...$10 less than a SS and you can use it on other hammocks as well...
or save an extra $45 and get a crowsnest ....
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold

I have a SS that I got off of here at a really good price,,,,,,, but I don't care for it. and don't even use it. Some folks have good experience with theirs but I didn't.

I made a clone out of Dri Duck ponchos and it actually works better, in my opinion.

Here lately, I have not used any under cover, SS, clone or UQ, and have been using only a good sleeping bag and dress warm. The lowest I have been is 27 degrees without having to use all the extra attachments, pads, quilts. Just the ECW sleeping bag.

What's the coldest you've slept in the HH without the SS?

I've had mine for about a month and have been experimenting. I would not purchase a new one at the current price, but it is worth having (Take Bob up on his offer). The pad to me is worthless, but the waterproof/wind resistant bottom cover shows some promise. It won't give you magical warmth by itself, but it does make your hammock more versatile if you are creative.

I've napped at 35°-40°F comfortably for a couple of hours. The only other insulation was an REI 55° Travelsack and I was wearing jeans and a sweatshirt. A strong wind took most of the warmth with it, but a large tarp would have helped.

KWPapke, a HF member joined Shug in some bitter cold using the SS:

    KWPake and SS at 6:00

There is a member of Backpacking Light, Otter, who has endured similar temperatures using the SS and JRB Nest. In my conversations with him, he said that mid-30° is chilly with the SS alone.

I've done down to the mid or upper 30's with a SS and was comfortable.
