I'll be driving from Elkhart, Indiana (the top of the state along 80). If anyone needs a ride along the route (I'll follow google maps), just give me a shout. Once we have the hike dates down, I submit time off.
It looks like everyone is liking the south bound route.
If we start on Tuesday - that gives us 3 full days *13 miles a day*
If we start on Monday - that gives us 4 full days *just under 10 miles a day*
Thoughts?
Thoughts? Your going to kill me. I'll vote the lesser of miles/day. LOL
If I remember correctly, the section being discussed isn't bad at all. There are a couple of significant 'bumps', but no monster climbs. A lot of ridge walking with 40' to 50' elevation changes. The reward is a very long and gradual downhill into Damascus. In 08, there was a group of people that hiked 43 miles (I think) in a day to get into Damascus. I think they called it the "Yellow Shoe Lace Challenge", or something that involved yellow bootlaces. Too many miles for a lazy Cannibal, but it shows it's not a terribly difficult section.
All that said, you don't want to spend Trail Days in 'recovery' mode. I have zero problems with low miles, big smiles days.
Trust nobody!
It was the 33 miles from Vandeventure shelter into Damascus. It sucked, but I got my laces. By the way, it's called the "Twinkletoes Yellow Shoelace Club". You can only join the club and get the laces if you are invited to do the section by someone who is already a member of the club. Kinda like the Skull and Bones of the AT I like to think.
It is a pretty nice section. The last stretch which is something like 6 miles can be done in an hour. It is as flat as Virginia gets. I think I did the last 6 miles into Damascus in around 45 minutes this year cause it was a downpour.
"Oh, like an Afghan Warlord"
