    IX insulated hammock sock

Last night I cobbled together a hammock sock based on Just Jeff's instructions. Insultex faces the bottom and sides, loosely following the lines of a traditional fishing dory.

I made the bottom piece 3.5' long, and included a six inch wide tail from the bottom piece almost to the foot end. The head end was left open from the bottom piece to the end. I put IX insulation on the bottom and the sides. I used the Speer Bugnet Adjustable Nonstructural Ridgeline.

Results: the foot end was never cold, but the wind got into the head end and opened it up.

Change: I'm going to make the head end just like the foot end, and create an opening in the middle, similar to what I remember Fin had on his sock a year ago.

Nice rig Mac ... how small does it compress up when packed? Weight?

Wow, that is almost exactly what I was thinking of making. It'll be my first DIY and I've never touched a sewing machine. So, I got a long ways to go. It's nice to know that it's within reach though. Great job.

Thank you for the kind words, folks! It weighs 17.6 oz (WM fabrics, not the lightest) and fits in a 1 gal Molly Pouch. I plan to add channels at the ends to cinch it up, so that will probably put it just over 18 oz.

BTW, I thought I would say again that the foot end was most toasty. Not once did I feel a cold spot, after settling in. I'm eager to close in the other end, and fashion an entrance in the middle. Of course, that will weigh even more!

I ordered a Treebark Brown Winter Dream tarp from Scott... that Woodland Camo clashes with Digital Camo, but the brown Speer hammock looks ok...

Hmmm ... it was a bit nippy out there last night and windy. Glad it worked out for you ... I slept pretty warmly myself ... but I was cuddled up to the blonde!

Well, I sewed up the head end... before I make a cut, is there already a design for a hammock sock opening?

I want to use no zipper, nor velcro if I can get away with it. I was thinking of making a horizontal cut about three or four feet long, in the middle of one side, right about the height of the top edge of the hammock. I'll add material to the top of the cut, so it will overlap the entry, and bind the edges.

Seems like this would have been done already...
