Seems sort of silly, but the one part of sewing that I just can't "get" no mater how hard I try is pinning. If I use them, everything just turns out worst. They get in the way, I don't know how to put them into the material, etc. I spend so much time fighting with them, 95% of the time I don't bother. I see them in photos all the time and it just makes me laugh (or maybe cry) because I honestly have no clue how to use those silly things....
I've made a down quilt, backpack and a huge 3.5 person 2# tarptent. And I have probably attempted to use pins maybe 4-5 times and in the end I always just give up and do without them.
It is one of things that keeps me from attempting to make clothing (that and the fact that the directions randomly leave out details). As it seems they always use a lot of pins in the process.

I too don't worry about the "pins" and rarely use them. I did buy some small colored clamps at Harbor Freight and will use those to hold the slippery nylon material together. Just have to remove the clamp when it gets near the sewing machine needle. One thing that helps in not having to have the pins is that my sewing machine has a walking foot and that will help keep the layers of fabric being pulled through the needle at an even pace for the bottom and the top.
Don't like pins either. Rarely use 'em. pyop (pin your own projects)

Pins.... ug.... Not too popular with me either, especially with outdoor fabrics. They fall out, get lost, or sometimes stab me!
I try to use as little as I can get away with!
Commenting at random- most outdoor fabric has enough texture to not need pins- I'll use 6-8 per seam, just to keep things together until i can use the fingers to adjust as the fabric layers go towards the needle- the only time I really really NEED them is sewing velvet- darn stuff insists on sliding sideways under pressure; I usually pin about every 1/2 inch on those seams. (not that you see too much velvet in the outdoors, but I just wanted to chime in.)

Mine is 20 years old and a Jr in college now, majoring in theatre and hospitality. She is an excellent seamstress and costume maker.
She taught me how to sew. We have 5 sewing machines and 2 sergers; she keeps one of each at her apartment. Over the years, I have taught her how to run a table saw, chop saw, band saw, grinder, nail guns, staplers. I don't think there is anything she can't make. I even bought here a nail gun for Christmas!
We made a new bed headboard and footboard for her this summer. She saw a picture in a catalogue (~ $800) and we ended up making it for ~$200.
