Climasheild XP 5 oz 1.2" UQ

Climasheild XP 5 oz 1.2" UQ.
How low will this take me ??

I will be using an ultra 20 for a top quilt and carrying a spare full length blue pad.

I recently tested a garlington type bottom shell to 15dF with this top quilt and I stayed very warm but got a lot of condensation. That setup was with one full length pad, (2) 1/2 length pads turned sideways and an undershell filled with 2 garbage bags with crumpled emergency blankets in them.
I was only wearing heavy johns and heavy socks.

    I tend to sleep warm.

my climashield XP 5oz UQ took me to 25F, but I felt that was pushing it...30F would be a safer number.
    I'm a warm sleeper btw

I'm a cool sleeper, my feet are always cold. My 5oz. XP underquilt is good to about mid-30's.

I've slept well in my 5.0 underquilt down to 14, although I layered up on clothing. I sleep really cold, and I'm using that term properly; I get cold easily. I think that quilt could go lower.

I'd agree with Animal Control about 25F being the lower end. I made my UQ where I could add and subtract layers, right now I have two layers of 5.0 XP, but don't know the limit of that yet.

Don't freeze to death taking the Ultra 20 down below 14F.

My 5 osy XP quilt wasn't enough for 20 degrees. I think I'd use it down to 32 degrees.

I find it interesting that my rigged setup with CCF pads and some garbage bags was good down to 14dF, but an XP 5 oz quilt is good for 10-20dF less. Maybe not so bad.

I was very warm. I was wearing heavy johns, and a down bomber style down hat.
When I went to sleep I was also wearing a salsa jacket expecting to be cold, but I came out of that PDQ as I was way too hot. It ended up under the hammock.

After that experience I would say wearing that salsa and some insulated pants and an insul balacava and down booties I would be good down to 0dF, especially with VBL cloths.

Needs another test run to be sure though.

Don't know, but we can pull our UQs out of their little stuffsacks and hook them on our hammocks in about ten seconds.

    True.

An UQ would be a lot less hassle. More expensive though.
I guess down is really the way to go.

Actually I was just astounded that this rig was as warm as it was.

Using an Ultra 20 for the first time at 14dF and what I have read about them being over rated, plus using an untested under insulation, I expected to wake up freezing at 1 am.

I had used this rig at warmer temps for a few hours at a time, discovering problems along the way and made adjustments for this test.

XP's clo is 0.82. If you multiply that number by the ounces per square yard, the 5 oz rating is 4.1. 3.0 will get most people down to 30 degrees. CLO ratings for synthetic insulation rate thusly: 1.0: 50 degrees F, 2.0: 40 F, 3.0: 30 F, 4.0: 20 F, 5.0: 10 F, 6.0: 0 F. At least this is what AYCE from thru-hiker.com quotes.
