Small battery operated fans and wet bandanas. But, even on the worst nights a hammock feels much cooler than a tent. I mean that with both meanings of "cooler".

cooldays askin how to be cool? seems like you should be a natural at that.to cool off make sure there is no body parts touching the netting,or single layer of hammock,or a skeeter will bite said parts.

Site selection, high and open to the breeze. Being suspended (above it all) you get good air circulation all around you.
I THOUGHT GETTING OLDER WOULD TAKE MUCH LONGER.
i try to play the "it's not gonna rain tonight" game in the summer and sleep without a tarp. then i get full blast of any available breeze with maximum ventilation. i also sleep without any sort of pad or underquilt or w/e in the summer (sometimes i need a little 20"x20" section for my butt even in the hottest of days)

People mention site selectio for a good breeze... is it possible to hang a tarp to CATCH the breeze and cool yourself even better? Or do you just end up losing a tarp
(1) Florida Water Cologne (awesome cooling effect when added to sponging water)
(2) Sham-Wow (soak in FW, spread out on chest or across back of neck)
(3) mini-fan (suspend from ridgeline)

Unfortunatly it was in the fifties most nights with a few nights in the forties. Brrrr... So I didn't get to use it. But I tested it earlier in the summer and it the setup works. I rigged some cord to hold it upside down on the ridge line near the foot end so that the breeze would blow along the length of my body.
A winter project, that I haven't started yet, is to create a loop with snaps to hold it to the ridge line. A wide strap around the battery case would keep the fan pointed in the right direction.
It uses a couple D-cell batteries so it isn't light. I imagine you could rig the power pack for lighter lithium batteries for back packing.
Yes, you can pitch your tarp to catch the wind. I usually just sleep without a tarp, though.
It's surprising how much ventilation a bug net stops, too. But trading a bug net for ventilation on a muggy summer night might not be the best option!
