    Bluegrass Hanger

Hey, all. I stumbled onto this site last Spring and have spent HOURS digesting all I could about hammocks and hammocking. To be honest, I found myself dreading camping trips with my son due to the poor sleep an sore shoulders/hips that accompanied the ground, roots, rocks and occasional pine cone.

With the revelation that accomanied my discovery of this site, I can honestly say my life has been changed. Previously, my camping trips with my son would normally consist of a 2 mile in, set up camp, eat, sleep, eat, pack, 2 mile out suck-fest of trying to endure it. However, since finding peace and comfort in my hammock, I've pushed many of my son's friends and fathers to do section hikes of the Sheltowee Trace here in KY and we have covered over 50 miles in two trips. They all think I'm crazy because I keep applying pressure to do 4 season camping...I have a need.

I know that 50 miles is not colossal milage for the fanatics out there, but for someone on the brink of giving it up all together combined with the opportunity to pass this love of the outdoors on to my boys, it's HUGE.

I just want to say thanks to all that have shared their stories of success and failure so that I may shorten the learning curve and get back to the woods. Hopefully, as my search for new destinations to hang expands, I'll get the opportunity to meet and thank many of you in person. If you ever find yourself looking at the Bluegrass State for some outdoor recreation, let me know.

BTW, I recently dropped some coin to become a donating member because I felt it was the least I could do.

    Peace, my bretheren and sisteren!

Nobody on this site is going to tell you that it's not huge. 50 miles is 50 miles, plain and simple. Add to the fact that you're doing it with your boys...GREAT JOB!

Welcome! I've thought of section/thru hiking the Sheltowee, but finding time to do it isn't easy. Glad you're having fun and taking your kids. Don't you just love hiking with them? One of my favorite things....

Welcome bdpalace! Sounds like the hammock bug bit ya. That's great you can get out with your son. I lived in KY for a while and really miss it. KY is a great state with lots of great parks and waterways. Enjoy!

    welcome

    Welcome.
I too began to hate the ground, hammocks are great are they not. Enjoy the time you have with your sons, as one who knows, it is all too soon gone when they have lives of their own. Camping with mine is some of my fondest memories.

    Welcome!!

Getting the kids outdoors overnight is a wonderful experience. My son still has not seen the wonder of a star filled sky free of the lights of the city. Its rained or been otherwise cloudy on every trip.

    One day.

South Manitou Island is a great place to go and star gaze in Michigan. Especially from the top of the dunes. highest point on the island. You can see a sunset out over the west side of Lake Michigan and then wait for the Milkyway to appear....absolutely Priceless.

Any time spent with the children in nature is time well spent in my book! And it doesn't have to be 50 miles, but congratulations....now you will be up for tommorrow's hike dude.
