Tension on a tarp tie out

OK... So what does everyone think is an ideal tension to be placed on a tarp tie out. Not the line itself.. but the actual attachment point on the tarp.

Ive tested 5 different types of shock cord and the Green Thera Band Tubing with some interesting results...

Just curious what everyones "off the top of your head" guess would be.

Corolary to that.....how do you attach the theraband and shock cord? My knots are slipping under the tension. So for me the easiest has been to make a little loop with small bungee cords...the realy small light ones with two hooks a little thicker than paperclips. I put that loop through the buried locked end of one side of my ucrs i made out of the recent group buy. Doubled into a loop these little bungees are quite strong and i tape over the hooks so i won't lose them in the woods like a slingshot.

This is easy but i am not sure what is the best and look forward to hearing.

    Cool...

When I use the SC on a tie out, I tie a stopper knot in either end of the SC and then clove hitch it into the line near the fixed eye of the main line.

With the thera band, I tie 2 knots in the main line 12" apart. 1 of those knots as right at the end of the bury for the fixed eye on the main line. 5" of thera band equals 4" of usable tube for tension. Then zip tie the thera band to the outside end of either knot.

what is zip tie? I used mason line on my dyneema to tie a knots on the dyneema, then tied another knot over the theraband outside the knots but the knots slipped toward each other when i put tension on them.

Here are pics of how I do it, only I use a zip-tie instead of the small thread on the ends.

Here's how I used to do it but I like the other way better.

And zip-ties are also called cable ties...they're plastic straps with a little box on one end...you thread the free end thru the box and a tooth holds the end tightly. Like the attached picture.

When attaching my JRB 11X10 or my Kelty Noah's Tarp 9X9 steep and low, I carry some of the Walmart bungees with the ball on the end. (They're less than a foot long.) Those will fit right through the loop on the tarp and can be staked directly to the ground. I think a pack of 6 was less than 3 bucks, and it provides a really simple solution.

    Yep, thank you.

If it werent for the fact the tubing looses its elasticity in extreme cold, I think its an excellent solution.

The SC I tested can achieve the same amount of tension as the green thera band.

But Im finding that between 4 and 6 pounds of tension is enough.

And with 1 vesion of 1/8 shock cord putting 4.3 pounds of tension on the tarp, the weight of the tie out is 6 grams. No knots, no hardware.

    JustJeff posted up a picture.

You can find them in the electrical department of your nearest Home Depot or Lowes.

If the actual stopper knots you are tying in the line are slipping, then you are probably using the wrong type of knot.

There are several types that work.... This is what I use

I attach my green TheraBand tensioners to the loops at the end of my lines with a mini-biner (0.1oz), but only use them when using my silnylon MacCat. No need for the tensioners when using the Spinntex version. The green TheraBand seems to be an ideal tension, which is why so many people use it.

Nice description- simple and visual. I've never thought of trying to verbally describe tie wraps.
