    Thanks for explaining everyone!

so it seems the down side to the theraband is you have to put knots into the actual line under the theraband which I suppose is not really that big a deal, and that the theraband may need to be replaced after a really cold night.

Positives are it has the right tension and it looks good.

    Bungee cords are the easiest.

Shock cord and theraband...how much length do you like?

I assume no one puts any tensioners on the ridgeline right?

Mine have no knots in the line passing through the TheraBand. I made mine 10" long with 17" of 2mm Spectra/polypropylene line inside of it, and a 1" loops on each end. If it stretches up to 17" then the line takes over. The ones that most other make and that JRB sell are shorter, but do the job exactly the same.

It would require a very, very strong tensioner... far beyond any TheraBand.

The purpose of this thread was to discuss what the "right" tension is.

4" of TB stretched to 12" produces 9.3 pounds of pull. Thats equivalent to hanging a little more than 1 gallon of water from each tie out.

Curious how you deploy the TB tensioner with no knots on the line inside the TB itself.

    Yeah,
I too would be interested in knowing how to achieve the proper tension on a tarp (I want to prevent damage to the tie-out point, and keep the tarp from flapping in a good strong blow especially silnylon). I was planning on using 1/8" zip chord attached in the way Headchange4You described in a thread earlier, and 2mm Dynaglide made into UCR for adjustability. Does anyone know if zip-chord (Bungee type stuff) loses any of it's stretchability in low temperatures?

Tee-Dee pointed out to me that zip-chords do not seem to effected by UV so much, since the polyester sheath is covering the inner rubber strands, and the fact that they have been used on tents for years now probably suggests that it would be a good way to go.

Does anyone think that the length of the tie-out in a variable situation would have any effect on the tension force applied to the tarp? I mean...does the tension force stay the same or is it variable.

What is everyone thinking on this subject? I hope this all made sense.

BC... The tension varies... It increases as the tensioner is pulled to its limit.

    If thats what you mean.

Yeah, I guess it would vary, now that I think about it. So...do we have an answer to your original question yet? I mean...has anybody PM'ed you Opie, and your just not sharing the answer yet?

The knot on the loop, which is inside of the end of the TheraBand, is held in place by the wrap... whether line or zip ties. I use line. I guess I should have said no knots on the line itself, but a knot on the loop instead.
